Case Study: Project Management Services Aids Rural Community with Technology Initiative

Having received a sizable grant to supply rural and urban communities with technology and training, Technology For All and its Texas Connects Coalition teamed up with the Services Team to help handle the project's procurement, asset tagging, and logistics demands.

 

Customer Challenge

Founded in 1997, Technology For All (TFA) is a nonprofit organization on a mission to empower under-resourced communities through the tools of technology. TFA recognized that even though our society has grown increasingly reliant on technology, the digital revolution has largely passed by many rural and urban populations. Not only does this absence of a technological background put these groups behind in school, but it also makes it difficult for them to find a job in today's tech-savvy economy.

 

In order to bridge this digital divide, TFA works with community-based organizations, corporations, foundations, technology providers, and public agencies to provide computer access and training.

In 2009, TFA joined forces with Austin Free-Net, another nonprofit organization, and created the Texas Connects Coalition (TXC2). They recently received a $9.6 million Broadband Technology Opportunities Program grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to create and maintain public computer labs in local community centers from Houston to Austin.

 

Although both TFA and Austin Free-Net had experience on local projects, TXC2's scope was immense. They needed a partner who could help them meet specific goals:

  • Rather than waste resources on warehousing equipment, TXC2 wanted the ability to fulfill orders on demand.
  • To maintain proper oversight of their investment, TXC2 needed to tag all of the new assets. Moreover, the tags for the new equipment would need to match the tagging plan they already had in place.
  • Because TXC2 planned on deploying more than 1,000 laptops and desktops, they needed a single image configuration that they could use to automate the setup process.
  • Instead of hiring a full-time project manager, TXC2 wanted to find a partner who could provide project coordination and oversight.
  • TXC2 needed the ability to provide technology from different manufacturers and with varying hardware specifications so that the equipment could be tailored to the unique needs of each location.

Thanks to their determination, TXC2 has currently opened more than 70 computer centers with over 1,200 desktop PCs and laptops serving an average of 15,000 users each week. Their hard work has changed the lives of countless individuals and families, and the Services Team is proud to be a continuing partner in their efforts to close the technology gap.
